DATE: Wednesday, February 26th from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm EST
PRESENTER: Ron Hetrick, Senior Labor Economist and VP of Staffing Product at Lightcast
In 2021, Lightcast published a paper called The Demographic Drought which served as a sobering wakeup call, illustrating a future where labor would be the rare commodity. The large and hard-working Boomers population was leaving the workforce, and the population after them was not as big and much more likely to have a college degree. On the surface the problem wasn’t obvious but brought up an important question addressed in another article in late 2022, Who is Going to do the Work? Meaning, if everyone has a college degree, who is going to feed us, build our homes, take care of the elderly, become police or firefighters? Who was going to be in our military? Now in 2024, the future has become clearer, and the math does not add up. As discussed in The Rising Storm: Building a Future-Ready Workforce to Withstand the Looming Labor Shortage, important industries will not have the labor force they need to function in the next 5 years. These industries are in the center of the path of certainty of the approaching storm. They will take damage from the hurricane, and if they are not prepared, the damage will be catastrophic. But, what if actions were taken now to prepare for the storm, could the damage be minimized? We will look at what factors created the storm, which industries are directly in its path, and which may not feel anything but small winds. We will show the only options that exist for these industries to protect themselves from the damage, and if they will provide adequate protection.
